What is video capsule endoscopy?
A capsule endoscopic procedure is a minimally invasive technique used to examine the digestive tract in detail. During this procedure, you ingest a capsule similar in size to a vitamin tablet, which is designed to detect abnormalities in the small intestine. The capsule contains a light source, a transmitter, and a camera. As it moves through your digestive tract, the camera captures thousands of images, enabling your doctor to identify potential issues and develop a personalized treatment plan.
Why do you perform a video capsule endoscopy?
Your doctor may recommend a video capsule endoscopy if you present with symptoms suggestive of gastrointestinal disease, such as the following:
- Celiac disease
- Inflammatory bowel disorders such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
- Unexplained intestinal bleeding that persists despite previous procedures such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy.
- Colon polyps
- Malignant or benign tumours in the intestine
Possible warning signs include:
- Traces of blood in the faecal matter
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Bloating, diarrhea, or excessive gas
- Tiredness
- Nausea or vomiting
How do you carry out a video capsule endoscopy?
You will be instructed to swallow the capsule with water, similar to taking a standard pill. The capsule contains a transmitter, a light source, and miniature cameras. After ingestion, you may resume your normal activities. You will also wear a small recording device around your waist, which receives and securely stores images transmitted from the capsule for later review.
Over several hours, the capsule travels through your esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Its sealed design prevents stomach acids from breaking it down, ensuring it remains intact throughout the examination. The camera continuously captures detailed images and transmits them to the recording device for subsequent analysis.
Once you return to the doctor’s office the following day, she’ll collect the recording device. The capsule naturally exits the body, usually within 24 hours, through a bowel movement. Your doctor will download and review the images on her computer.
