What to Expect
Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is a detailed examination of the upper digestive tract, including the throat, oesophagus, and stomach. The procedure involves inserting a flexible, illuminated scope through the throat into the stomach. Gastroscopy is performed to identify the underlying cause of symptoms and to enable timely treatment, which may reduce the risk of recurrence.
Gastroscopy is used to diagnose and manage symptoms including difficulty swallowing, heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, the presence of blood in vomit, and tarry, black stools.
Gastroscopy may be performed to dilate a narrowed oesophagus, to facilitate the removal of abnormal growths, or to assist with nutritional intake when normal eating is impaired.
A flexible gastroscope is inserted through the mouth, down the throat, and into the stomach. Air is introduced to expand the area for improved visualisation. Tissue samples may be collected for laboratory analysis.
Colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that examines the large intestine and rectum to detect abnormalities such as polyps, inflamed tissue, or malignancies.
During a colonoscopy, a flexible, lighted colonoscope is inserted through the anus. A camera transmits images to a monitor, enabling the identification of abnormal growths and other irregularities.
Colonoscopy allows for the removal of polyps and the collection of tissue samples for further pathological analysis.
Recovery from anaesthesia may require an hour or longer. Patients are typically required to remain in the recovery unit until the effects of sedation have subsided. It is essential to arrange for a responsible individual to provide transportation home after the procedure, as lingering grogginess is common. During this period, strenuous exercise, signing important documents, and making significant decisions should be avoided.
