Dr Barbara Makumbi
Dr Barbara Makumbi is a specialist medical gastroenterologist and hepatologist with focused expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), endoscopy, and hepatology.
She qualified as a specialist physician in 2020, concurrently completing her Master’s in Internal Medicine (MMed). Her academic achievements were recognized by her invitation to the International Golden Key Honour Society, an accolade awarded to the top 15% of students in their faculty.
Driven by a commitment to digestive and liver health, Dr Makumbi completed subspecialist training and qualified as a gastroenterologist and hepatologist in 2023, earning the Certificate in Gastroenterology (Cert Gastro SA). During her fellowship, she was awarded the Best Senior Medical Gastroenterology Fellow Award at the 2023 National Fellows Congress.
Dr Makumbi is also an active educator and communicator. She has presented at numerous Continuing Medical Education (CME) events and previously served as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Tambo Memorial Hospital. She currently serves as an Honorary Lecturer and External Examiner at the University of the Witwatersrand.
She contributes to leadership and professional development as a member of the CMSA YSF Executive Committee, where she is responsible for external communication, and as the elected representative for the College of Physicians of South Africa.
Outside of her medical career, Dr Makumbi pursues interests in travel, literature, art, and photography.
